Concrete, once heralded as the material that would transform the world, has done so – but not as we first imagined. It is cheap, yet the true cost is our environment and future. Cement production emits more CO₂ than aviation and deforestation combined, consumes vast water supplies, and depletes marine sand, a critical yet finite resource. Ubiquitous, yet largely unnoticed, concrete shapes our world in ways we seldom acknowledge. Whether we admire or despise it, concrete is here to stay, therefore we must engage with its destructive potential, not just its role in construction.
These cameraless images are created within the parameters of the Concrete Photography movement. Concrete here is not just a subject, it is an active participant, a material critique, and a force of both creation and decay. Abstract and indexical, liberating the image from mere documentation, challenging traditional representation in photography, yet embody the relentless transformation concrete imposes on our world. These are not just of something, but engage with an urgent issue, provoking thought and new conversations.
